The title here is slightly misleading; this isn't a greatest hits album. Instead, it's a collection of live performances (apparently the soundtrack to a documentary called THE LAST EXPERIENCE) from different periods of Hendrix's career, and with varying personnel. The first few tracks, including a beautiful version of "Little Wing," feature the original three-piece Experience band, with Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums. Other cuts feature an augmented band with second guitar and flute; these may or may not be from Hendrix's Woodstock Festival period (on "Bleeding Heart," he introduces Traffic's Chris Wood and Dave Mason). In any case, the performances are generally first rate, and the sound, although variable, is never less than listenable. Highlights include a careening jam on Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" and a definitive version of "Fire."
